The Whitham equation is a model for the evolution of unidirectional waves on shallow water. Aceves-Sanchez et al. (2012) and Hur & Pandey (2018) proposed different bidirectional generalizations of the Whitham equation. Although these systems have been shown to accurately predict the evolution of waves of depression in the laboratory, they are thought to be ill-posed. We will present comparisons of these equations with measurements from laboratory experiments. We will compare their mathematical properties with those of the Euler equations. Finally, we will examine the stability of traveling-wave solutions to these equations in detail.
